A little taster to get you excited...

Teaching Artists and U.N. Sustainable Development Goals: What’s the Connection?

If you were to write a letter to a prominent NGO explaining how teaching artists can contribute in crucial ways to Sustainable Development Goals like “No Poverty,” “Good Health,” and “Climate Action”—what would you say?

Session host Tricia Tunstall wants to help you figure that out.  And by the end of the session, you will be halfway through writing your letter!

Do you know any artists who were flown in to spend a day with The World Bank to help them figure out how teaching artists can help them achieve their Sustainable Development goals? Well, Tricia Tunstall was.  Tricia is one of the world's leading advocates for the seminal importance of music and arts education in socially engaged settings; her most recent book is Playing for Their Lives: The Global El Sistema Movement For Social Change Through Music (W.W.Norton, 2016, co-written with Eric Booth). Her previous book, Changing Lives: Gustavo Dudamel, El Sistema, and the Transformative Power of Music (W.W. Norton, 2012), won a 2013 ASCAP Award and the 2016 Prix Des Muses, and has been published in six languages.  She is the co-founder and executive editor of the newsletters The Ensemble and The World Ensemble —the primary communications vehicle of the global movement.

Over the past year, Tricia has been exploring the potentially rich intersection of arts education and the set of U.N. Sustainable Development Goals, which aims at achieving 17 fundamental goals around the world by 2030, and which has been adopted by NGOs around the world as a guiding vision for the future. Her presentation to the World Bank last year stimulated an ongoing robust conversation about this intersection – and she’s inviting you into this conversation.  A conversation that will continue at ITAC5 and beyond because it may be the biggest project for our global field.
